Those wishing to see a unique 1635 play set in the times of the Spanish golden age may want to take a trip to the West End to see Life is A Dream produced by Jonathon Munby.
The play is set in Poland and is based around a young prince who is heir to the throne but spends his day locked in a tower room, after it was foretold by several omens that he would one day overthrow the kingdom ruled by his father.
As you may have guessed, throughout the play there are several twists that allow fate to prevail despite the king’s attempt to take matters into his own hands although unlike in other twisted stories of fate, such as Oedipus Rex, this play has a happy ending that is not absurd or predictable.
The charm of the play is in fact the many twists that come about as it progresses including two attempts by the father to allow his son to take the throne on purpose, instead of forcing him to overtake it, due to his anxiety over how fate will prevail.
The hero, the young prince, is played by Dominic West, who is able to charismatically captivate the audience despite the fact that his presence does not seem to match the physical description of what you would imagine an imprisoned prince to look like. In other words, it seems as if there was a weight room and a dietician in that tower along with the prince.
