Movie stars line up for theatre awards

Many film stars are in the running for the Whatsonstage.com acting gongs awards for theatre performances this year including Helen Mirren and Jude Law. Also nominated is Sadie Frost who debuted in the West End in the play Touched. Frost is up for best solo performance.

In the newcomer category Diana Vickers from X Factor is up for the honour for her role in The Rise and Fall of Little Voice against Lenny Henry from the Evening Standard for his role in Othello.

The winners, all of whom are chosen by the voting public, will be announced this February.

Sadie Frost calls her nomination an honour, due to the amount of work it took to play ten different characters. She stated that she would be up at five in the morning trying to learn the lines before the show.

Frost is working on a new role in the future, but for the most part she said she is spending most of her time at home playing the mummy role.
Lenny Henry said that he has enjoyed his work with Shakespeare, stating that it’s nice to be in a more established play, since comedians generally are off on their own backstage.

Jez Butterworth’s production of Jerusalem received four nominations and Lucy Prebble’s Enron took five nominations.

Also notable are the musicals Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Sister Act, and Trevor Nunn’s A Little Night Music all of which received seven acting gong nominations.
