Matt Lucas to open Prick Up Your Ears

Beginning on September 20th a new comic will take the stage at the Comedy Theatre as Matt Lucas will debut the newest Simon Bent play called Prick Up Your Ears which is based on the life of past playwright Joe Orton. For those who cannot wait, previews will be held on September 17th.

Lucas will play Orton’s murderer and lover, Kenneth Halliwell, as described in the biography of Orton’s life with the same title and on Orton’s own diaries which have been published. Orton himself will be portrayed by Chris New.

Set in 1962, Prick Up Your Ears is the story of recent graduates Halliwell and Orton who want to earn their place in the literary scene of London while also attempting to improve the overall value of library books. The story shows Orton’s subsequent rise to success and Halliwell’s decline to obscurity and the emotions that run between the two men as a result until Orton’s death in 1967 when he was beaten to death by Halliwell.

Before his death, Orton wrote the prominent plays Entertaining Mr. Sloane, the Ruffian on the Stair, What the Butler Saw, and Loot.

Past show credits of Matt Lucas who is the most prominent star in the cast include Little Britain Live, Shooting Stars, Alice In Wonderland, Gavin and Stacy, Shooting Stars, and many more acting feats which are a mixture of Broadway, cinema, and television ventures.

Prick Up Your Ears will play until December 6th and will be taking the place of the musical Too Close To The Sun which is currently playing until September 5th.
