This show premiered in the UK back in 2001 at Madame JoJo’s, following its successful Off-Broadway opening in 1999. If the title of the show tells you what to expect, Wilmott springs a surprise.

The cast of the show begin with a promise that “Tonight, we throw inhibition away/ Why even bother to make a fuss/ when it’s obvious to us/ you’re here to see/ gratuitous nudity”. However, it is not until we are about two thirds of the way into show that we actually get a bit of what we have supposedly come to see.

By that time, the level of tension and anticipation is at such a height that the very delivery of that promise comes as somewhat of a surprise.

To the shows credit, it does not convey the impression of having been cobbled together as it is from the contributions of thirteen different writers. Instead, it plays rather like a gay rendition of “A Chorus Line”, in which we watch a handful of boys auditioning for a nudie revue – and finally appearing in it.

The show is carried by the cast, which is collectively, as well as individually engaging. It is refreshing to note that the members of the cast seem to have been chosen for their talent rather than other assets. Every single member of the cast can act, sing and charm equally well.

Perhaps the greatest success of the show is the fact that the nudity ends up being incidental to the show. Wilmott anticipates correctly that the novelty of six naked guys on stage would wear off eventually, even though the performance lasts only 65 minutes. He raises the bar by withholding the nudity, which is the master stroke.
